In automobiles, helical gears or herringbone gears are usually used, the latter is a combination of two helical gears of opposing hands, which are concentrically connected together, thereby doubling the width of the end face of the helical gear.

In differentials, bevel gears are used because they can transfer motion between shafts placed at right angles.
