PWE Series PTO Shaft

PTO (Power Take Off) refers to the power output shaft, which is a component of the mechanical transmission system that outputs mechanical energy to drive other devices. PWE PTO Shaft is a special type of PTO shaft that can be used to drive actuators for cranes, excavators, and other industrial equipment.PWE Series PTO Shaft Walterscheid Replacement PWE480 PWE580 PWE675 Agricultural Tractor PTO Driveline

PTO Safety Practices

Although not always convenient or easy, there are several ways to reduce the risk of PTO injury events. These safety measures
Practice provides protection for the most common type of PTO winding.

  • Maintain all components of the PTO system in a shielded and protected state.
  • Regularly test the power train shield by rotating or rotating it to ensure it does not get stuck on the shaft.
  • Before disassembling for cleaning, repairing, maintaining, or adjusting the machinery, please disconnect the PTO and turn off the tractor.
  • Always walk around the tractor and machinery, rather than crossing the rotating axis.
  • Always use the recommended transmission system for your machine. Do not switch transmission systems between different machines.
  • Correctly position the tractor's drawbar for each machine to help prevent transmission system stress and separation during uneven terrain and sharp turns.
  • Reduce the abuse of the PTO shaft by complying with the following regulations: avoiding sharp turns to avoid pinching the rotating shaft between the tractor and the machine; Minimize excessive expansion and contraction as much as possible; Gradually apply power to the shaft; And avoid overtightening the sliding clutch on PTO driven machines.
  • Ensure that the PTO powertrain is securely locked onto the tractor PTO stub shaft.
  • Keep the universal joint in phase. (If you are not familiar with this term, please refer to the operating manual or talk to a farm tool dealer.)

Causes and Solutions of PTO Shaft Faults

The PTO shaft may encounter high stress and high load during operation. However, they are designed for this purpose and sometimes fail for various reasons. When this situation occurs, there are usually signs on the shaft or its components indicating the cause of the malfunction.

The yoke ear is bent, the power output shaft connection is damaged

And the bearings on the connecting shaft of the implement or tractor are damaged. Due to the compression of the PTO shaft being too long for the application. This can be fixed by shortening the length of the PTO shaft. This process can only be carried out by experienced personnel.

Yoke ears deformed/damaged

Usually caused by excessive torque or impact load. Avoid overload by engaging the driver under load or at high speed. The tractor PTO should be engaged or disengaged at low speeds to reduce the impact load on the PTO shaft. If damage is found to the yoke, the clutch (if installed) may also need to be adjusted.

Yoke ear/side wear

This is caused by a large working angle. When the joint angle exceeds 45 degrees or the joint angles are not equal, the PTO should be disconnected. The maximum working angle is 25 degrees. The maximum angle to avoid contact between the PTO drive shaft shield and rotating components during a short period of output reduction is 45 degrees. When stationary, the maximum joint angle is 90 degrees. When operating the machine, aim at the same small joint angle. The maximum working angle of the wide-angle PTO shaft is 25 degrees. They can be used at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius during a short period of output reduction. When stationary, the maximum joint angle is also 80 degrees. A larger angle can cause damage to the joint.

Excessive wear on the telescopic tube, shaft detachment, widening of the telescopic part, poor lubrication, or insufficient overlap of the tubes

Under normal circumstances, the sleeve should be lubricated every 50 hours. This may vary depending on the situation encountered. Under normal working conditions, the expansion tube must overlap by at least half of its length, and under all working conditions, it must overlap by one-third of its length.

The expansion tube is damaged/deformed

Usually caused by excessive torque or impact load. Avoid overload by engaging the driver under load or at high speed. The tractor PTO should be engaged or disengaged at low speeds to reduce the impact load on the PTO shaft. If damaged pipes are found, the clutch (if installed) may also need to be adjusted. Ensure that the PTO shaft does not come into contact with the tractor or machinery during operation or rotation. Vibration caused by unequal or excessive joint angles can also lead to wear.

The expansion tube is bent

Usually caused by contact between the PTO drive shaft and machine parts or tractor parts (such as drawbars or connecting rods). Ensure that the shaft has clearance during all operating angles.

Wear of shielded bearings

Caused by insufficient lubrication. The shield installed on our Aksan series PTO shaft is supported by nylon bearings, usually red or white. These bearings are made of nylon materials, but still require lubrication (grease) to reduce friction and wear. Lube every 8 hours.

The cross bearing accelerates wear

It is usually caused by excessive loads encountered when operating equipment at speeds higher than recommended or rated power.

The cross bearing arm is broken

Usually caused by excessive torque peaks or impact loads. It may be caused by improper clutch adjustment, collision, or improper operation by the driver when engaging or disengaging the drive device under load or overspeed conditions.

The centering system on the wide-angle joint is damaged

Caused by bending of the joint during operation of standstill by more than 80 degrees. Prevent excess bending by modifying the hitch or operating procedure.
