Agricultural PTO Shaft for John Deere Square Balers 100

Square balers typically use PTO (Power Take off) shafts to obtain power. PTO shaft refers to the shaft output from a tractor or other power source, typically used to transmit power to the power system of a square baler.
When the tractor or other power source is started, the PTO shaft will also rotate accordingly. Square balers typically use one or more PTO connectors to connect to the PTO shaft. These connectors allow the power system in the square baler to obtain power through the PTO shaft.
Once the PTO connector is connected to the PTO shaft, the square baler can start working. During operation, the power system of the square baler obtains power through the PTO shaft, and then transmits the power to the rotating components of the square baler through the transmission device. This will cause the square baler to start rotating and complete the baling process.

Notes for using the PTO Shaft

  • Keep all PTO guards and shields in place, even when the PTO is not operating.
  • Always disconnect the PTO when not in use.
  • Never engage the PTO while the machine engine is shut off.
  • Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from PTO.
  • Keep hair away from the PTO.
  • Never operate PTO shafts at extreme angles.
  • Be sure that the PTO spinner shields rotate freely at all times. Always disengage all power and shut off tractor before servicing.

How to Identify an Agricultural PTO Driveline

An agricultural power take-off (PTO) driveline is a drive-shaft type device that connects a tractor to the farming implement it needs to operate.  The connection provided by the driveline allows the implement to draw power directly from the tractor’s engine.  Much like fluid hydraulic mechanisms, PTO drivelines will eventually break down from the rigors of daily farming projects and need to be replaced or repaired. When it is necessary to replace or repair a PTO driveline, it is important to choose the correct components applicable to the specific equipment in use.  In order to choose the replacements correctly, you will need to know the answers to these four simple questions about your particular driveline:

  • What kind of equipment will the driveline be used for? (Identify by application)

If you know which equipment the powertrain system will be used for and wish to replace the entire powertrain system, then identification is a fast two-step process:
Simply select the equipment category, and then select the pipe shape (as shown in the figure below) and length of the transmission system to be replaced.
If it is necessary to replace components of the power train, please refer to the following identification process.

  • What are the individual driveline components? What are the individual driveline components?

  1. The tractor yoke: PTO assembly starts with this type of yoke. It is connected to the tractor and used to connect the power transmission system. There are two main types of tractor yokes. The first type is a spring lock, which uses a spring loaded collar to connect and release the yoke. The second type is quick disconnection, which uses a pin mechanism for connection.
The tractor yoke can also be specified as a 6-spline, 20-spline, or 21-spline, indicating its matching method with the connection on the tractor. This can be identified by calculating the notch on the inner side of the yoke ring.
  2. Cross and bearing kit: This is a U-joint used to connect the yoke in the PTO assembly. The spider and bearing kit will have a snap ring located inside or outside the bushing, which means it can be found in the yoke ear.
  3. Yoke: Use a spider and bearing kit to connect the tractor yoke to the transmission shaft.
  4. Shaft: The shaft is a metal rod at the core of the transmission system, providing its length and connecting yoke attachments.
  5. Tube: The ferrule shaft runs inside this metal cylinder, adding reinforcement to the transmission system
    Трубка Трубка
  6. Clamp Yoke: This yoke is connected to the end of the clamp sleeve and connects the power train to the implement using a second spider and bearing kit.
  7. Implement Yoke: Connect the power train to a machine or equipment operated by a tractor.
  8. Protective device guard: Place a hard plastic cover around the transmission system to prevent damage during operation.
  • Is the driveline North American or Metric?

The simplest way to determine whether the PTO is a North American power output or a metric power output is to determine the shape of the oil pipe and shaft system. If the oil pipe/shaft system is square, rectangular, hexagonal or spline, then the PTO is a domestic PTO. If the ferrule/shaft system is bell shaped, lemon shaped, or star shaped, it is metric. There are two types of metric powertrain systems: German style (Walterscheid brand) and Italian style (Bondioli and Pavesi). The German style shafting/tubing has lemon and star shaped contours, while the Italian style shafting and tubing have a bell shaped design.

  • What series is the driveline?

The accurate method to determine which series of PTO you have is to take two measurements of the spider and bearing kit on the tractor end of the transmission system. Use a caliper to measure the outer diameter of the U-joint cover, which is the same as measuring the inner diameter of the yoke ear.
