Though the yokes and U-joints are necessary for function, the safety chains and shield are very important parts of the PTO shaft to keep you safe during use.

• Internal Yoke- There are two, located at both ends of PTO shaft -tractor and implement. This is welded to the drive end.
• Universal Joint- There are two, located at both ends of PTO shaft.
• External Yoke- There are two, located at both ends of PTO shaft. It has a “Y” shape to connect to the U-joint and a female hole.
• Safety Chains- The chains are used to secure the PTO shaft onto the equipment and onto the tractor.

How Does PTO Shaft Work?

The power output shaft transfers power from the tractor to the device of your choice. The PTO power train is the power source for all components that require power on a tractor. The PTO transmission system is often overlooked in daily maintenance and inspection, but it should not be ignored as they are crucial when operating farm equipment.

PTO (Power Take Off) shaft is a common power transmission device that typically connects external equipment such as the power output shaft and generator of construction or agricultural machinery. The working principle of the PTO shaft is based on the principle of rotational mechanics, which transfers the rotational force of external equipment to the internal mechanical system, thereby achieving power transmission and conversion.
When external equipment (such as excavators, loaders, cranes, etc.) needs to output power, it will transmit power to the internal mechanical system through the PTO shaft. At this point, the power output shaft of the external device will be connected to the PTO shaft, and the rotational force of the external device will be transmitted to the internal mechanical system through the PTO shaft. The internal mechanical system will convert power into other forms of energy as needed, such as electrical energy, thermal energy, etc.
The PTO shaft usually includes one or more reducers, which can convert the high speed of external devices into low speed of internal mechanical systems. In addition, the PTO shaft may also include one or more gearboxes that can convert the rotational force of external devices into other forms of rotational force, such as axial or radial forces.
